During the 25th Anniversary livestream of Final Fantasy VII in 2022, Square Enix announced that the 2020 release of Final Fantasy VII Remake was the first installment of a trilogy, with the second game named Rebirth. The first part of the trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Remake, deviated from the original game’s timeline, leading to speculation and confusion among fans. However, the “first look” trailer for FFVII Rebirth showcased intriguing scenes of Cloud and Sephiroth in the woods and hinted at the fate of certain characters, igniting excitement among fans.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake and its sequels go beyond simple remasters, incorporating new story elements that expand on the original plot from 1997 and other side stories like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. This has fueled speculation about the implications of the new additions to the story. The third installment of the FFVII Remake trilogy is currently unnamed and its release date is yet to be announced.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set to be released in spring 2024 exclusively for PlayStation 5.
