Well, it's better than I was expecting. ****loads of features, including manual control, battle commands, stylish techniques, a ten-part optional menu at the beginning asking about every aspect of the game, AN ENTIRE DICTIONARY; these are a few of the awesome things in this massive and amazing game.
I think you should get this. It's a nice venture away from the FF series and style. The battle engine, while at first difficult, is fun and rewarding in due time.

I generally try to shy away from non-final fantasy square games. I find most of them suck balls, like that messed up tactical robot game. You would thing gigantic killer robots in a post ww3 warzone would be cool.... but they found a way to make it horribly boring.... *sigh*

Star Ocean isn't really a Square Enix product; they just have distribution rights. Tri-Ace actually makes the games, and they do consistently solid work.

I have the game and i have beaten it 3 times, and it gets better every time, once u have beaten it once u r alowed to go to the maze of Tribulations where their is a bunch of new stuff it is also the place where u find the strongest boss in the game harder them the final boss. If u have played Valkyrie Profile, u will know this character, she is know as Freya. If u r not careful she can kill u and ur party is a single att that covers most of the playing filed. She has 20,000,000hp and 3,000,000mp. there is a little more but i dont feel like telling u ;) .

Have you played the previous Star Ocean games? I'm just wondering whether there's some kind of vital story that one would be missing.

No, the 2 Star Ocean r not at all related in storyline but game play is kinda the same, and u cant have all characters if u get 1 u cant get 1 of the others.

So, story-wise, it's FF-like. But gameplay-wise: it ain't.

That's exactly how it is. And by the way, I stopped playing it. I've pretty much stopped playing all video games, except God of War. I like that game. The RPGs are getting kind of boring for me. I think I may actually be developing a life. o_O

I believe there are just three. First on SNES, second on PS1, third on PS2.
I never played the first one. I liked the second one enough to buy it, though it gets very hard towards the end. And liked the third one up until a point when the story just coo-coo bananas and I realized how dumb and pointless it was.
In my opinion, SO3 was strike two against Square(-Enix), strike one being FFX-2.
So in short. I have no idea.

Let me same something, being the about the only person here thats played all 3 Star Ocean games. You dont have to start with the first one, it'd be great if you did but u dont have too. But it might be hard to find the first Star Ocean game, its even hard to find the second one. The stories aren't linked and the game plays the same so it does not matter which u start out with. As for SO3 being Square-Enix's their second strike, thats all a matter of oppion because I personaly liked the games and you dont like the game but thats your choise.

I have the second one for the PSX, but I haven't played it that much, in the seven years that I have owned it I have hardly touched it. It's not that I didn't like it, but there is something about starting a game and not finishing it that I am notorious about. I had a friend tell me today as a matter of fact that I do that too much. I haven't played the third one, but from what I hear it is a pretty decent RPG. I also heard today that Grandia III is actually pretty good. Now I own the very first one on PSX, this game is actually pretty difficult to obtain from what I understand. I almost got rid of it when I first got it, but something told me to keep it and at least play through it once just for the sake of being an RPG fan. I'm glad to say I still have it and haven't played it yet, along with Chrono Cross, which I have never even placed in my console, but merely unwraped it. I have owned that game for at least six years. I personally would like to try Star Ocean three because you tend to have a better opinion when you try something first. I, like most people here I'm sure, am waiting for a sequel for Legend of Dragoon. If you call yourself an RPG fan and you haven't played Legend of Dragoon, please do so ASAP, just a heads up though it's not for everyone, but then again RPG fans aren't everyone. Laterz.
