I know that this is already the name of a game coming out for ps2...but I think we can handle it.
In japanese, "Kuon" means "the nine grudges."
It is the mid-eighties, and there is a lot of speculation in Japan about a certain house in the (imaginary) town of Tyoko (think of it as the anagram lover's tokyo/kyoto), and it having a history of numerous exorcisms inside it's walls. It was owned by the Tokugawa family in feudal Japan, followed by numerous owners, all of who ended up dying or killing themselves in a brutal manner. In one instance, a man was found strapped to the ceiling by his own intestines, and there were bitemarks, showing that he was still alive somehow, trying to chew through the intestine. A lot of this was only known by few, but the rest knew that place to be somewhere you just don't go near.
Lately, there have been horrific screams coming from inside the house, the villagers report, and sights of people flying out the windows. When people saw this phenomenon, they went to check it, but there was no body at the ground. This such behavior went on for more than one hundred years.
Bring in teenager Hideo. Hideo has always been fascinated by the myths and legends of the Tokugawa house. For a school project, he decides to do the history of old buildings in his area. Naturally, Hideo chose the house. Him and 3 friends went into the house, taking notes and pictures. They never came back out. Their bodies were never found. This was the latest case of dissapearences in the Tokugawa house. Now its up to you to find out why and how.
You can approach this story in a number of ways. For one, you can take the role of a highschool friend of Hideo, but that would mean you would'nt have any firepower, unless under certain circumstances. You could also be a cop or detective, giving you the oppurtunity to be armed. Because there are monsters in this house, and you must keep your eyes open the whole time. Another way is to be Hideo and friends yourself. But I would hate to ruin it for you, they are quite dead. But nobody knows that except yourself. Your role would be trying to aid the kids and the cops by pointing out clues (for example, if there is a certain note that would help them, you would make sure that they find it), and also figuring out how you died.

Personality: Your opinion of ghosts and monsters, the way you think out situations, how well you solve puzzles, etc.
Weapon: Generally, only the TCPD (Tyoko City Police Dep.) will have firearms or weapons. The rest is just situational (like a hammer on the ground, metal pipe, etc)
Keep in mind that if you ever die, you will be possessed by a spirit from the house. The spirits are different from the monsters. They are the spirits of the people who died, and they are not happy. But there is that option. You would still be alive, but you would be possessed, leading to more possibilities. Think of the general monster stuff and battle to be Silent Hill-ish.
