View Full Version : New Idea for the Setting Sun and Rising Moon

Instead of the regular games, why not have just simple quests that tend to be shorter than an actual story/game. A person or persons can do a quest in search of something or to gain something like a weapon or gil.

And, why not give out gil to people who participate in these quests and COMPLETE the quest? Like have a reward of 100 gil to whomever kills a demon or something? And/or give out like a sword or a set of armor (depending on the difficulty and stubbornness of the one who controls the monsters, the better the equipment)?

And why not make a thread dedicated to the RPG with the members' characters? The stuff that they get from quests, they can have for their RPG character?

...I'm stupid, and I can't get my head round anymore role-playing.

Sounds nice Vauly :) If you think you can handle that yourself, drop me a line in msn/irc ;)

It sounds good to me, but I must warn you, I´m still going to be a bit more interested in keeping good old fashioned roleplaying games alive. The type with plotlines etc. I enjoy it much more, because it´s more like writing a story than like say going on a quest without substance or character development. But I don´t see why both can´t be done.

Well, KOD, I was thinking that the regulars to Setting Sun and Rising Moon could create a permanent character, and if they choose they can play it all the time or part of the time to gain cool stuff I'm hoping to offer out in the quests, if they wanted to.

The quests are just basically a short story, just with more adventuring and offering out stuff, like more gil or possibly a nice little pretty pink pixie pony, or if possible a coupon so people may be able to/want to buy SF stuff.

The quests will be provide a monster to fight in order to get the prizes/riches. A very hard monster that I will ask my DM brother to provide info for ;) And depending on the difficulty level of the monster or monsters, the greater the prize or amount of gil awarded.
I'm thinking of letting the thread run for ONE week for people to join/sign up for the quest and then after that, anyone late for signing up, well then you'll have to catch up with the rest of the group.

I will make a permanent character to help out with the quests and any other stuff.

I will make a Character Profile thread in Setting Sun and Rising Moon for those of you who wish to create a permanent character and use it whenever they wish. The permanent character doesn't necessarily have to be in all created games.

Any further questions, don't hesitate to contact me via through MSN/AIM/Email/Private Message/or in this thread (just as long as it's not spam)

Sorry for the double post....

I just thought of another idea that could be added to the quests that are completed in the Setting Sun and Rising Moon thread.

Gold will be given out to the players' characters. I was also thinking of adding an item shop for the Setting Sun and Rising Moon for characters to purchase items/weapons/stuff with the gold that is given out on the quests.

And say that the TBRPGs that are completed, an amount of gold is given to the characters and they can use that gold to buy items.
I will make a new thread for the items and stuff that can be purchased to make your characters stronger. Additional info such as armor class, price, magical properties that can be added to the armor/weapons, magical properties that the armor/weapons have, and accessories such as ropes, candles, mounts, backpacks, food, and all the stuff will be neccessary for adventuring and survival.

AND! Let's start from scratch. Everyone begins with a level one wussy character with wussy beginning items. Anyone that participates in the TBG's and quests, they will be given gil (for the person) and gold (for the character).
If anyone else has posted in the Character Profiles thread, you'll all notice that I have a very powerful dude. I'll be using that character to maybe help out the party or attack the party on occasions. I'll also have a low level character.

If anyone hasn't noticed, I'm kind of basing this off of Dungeons and Dragons. I have no idea where my monster's manual book is..... so... anoyone who has the book, care to help out with setting up monsters? :D

Heh. I'm sure you got this battle idea from somewhere besides D&D. We tried the stores and stuff once. It didn't work. People felt limited. If you have people start on level one, they need to make a permanent character. Permanent characters mean nothing good. They tend to lead to mixed emotions between games. If you make a new character, then you lose your level.
Giving people gil is hard to do, and I doubt it will work. Why don't you try to set up your own system instead of ripping someone else's?

Dan, maybe you can understand now. Maybe not.

You sound like you're in a bad mood, Kayla.

Look, I'm just typing out old ideas and some new ideas, in hopes that someone who is an RPG fanatic will give some suggestions and help out. I'd greatly appreciate the help. I just want to bring The Guild out of the garbage and bring it back to life as it once was, even though there's more to life than message boards... And to get more people to join in Setting Sun and Rising Moon.

How about whoever wants to come up with their own weapons and items and such and have them on their character, they'll have to pm me to put it up in the item shops and how much it costs and provide a description of its attributes, or they can have a specialized item just for their little lonesome, but they will have to set a responsible price for it to get it.

Starting over makes the games more challenging and for most people, that is fun and exciting. I for one, like a certain degree of challenges and a level of difficulty.

Items and accessories may be limited, but suggestions and ideas are endless.

Bad mood? No, I don't think so. I'm just very inept to change. I think everything is fine. We tried this before and it didn't work. In my honest opinion, this system is bull****. And really, do you need you 'DM brother' to make a monster? How hard is it to create one and decide when it dies?
The Guild was never in the garbage. People just don't look at the forum. Changing things within the forum isn't going to help if people don't even check frequently. Not to mention that inorder to have levels you have to have some way to level up... so where are you gonna take that idea from?

I'm so fed up with this forum. Things are changing for the worst.

Aw come on! Are you angry because I'm an admin? I'm not taking over the Setting Sun! I'm just in charge of the Quests for heaven's sake!
The Guild was getting nowhere! It was at first, but now that everyone is getting back into school, everyone will have homework instead of checking out to see whats new on SF! I'm just HELPING to grab people's attention so they'll want to play in the Guild and come to it more often! That's why I suggested quests and from quests, I'm getting new ideas and using old ideas such as your shops, in hopes that it might work this time and that more people will want to play! I'm not giving up on the Guild. I'm only trying to help to better it and make it more active! And if The Guild is more active, so will be SF.

Lmao. No I'm not mad because you're an admin. I really couldn't care less. I don't care about the old ideas either... like I said, I'm just inept to change. Oh well, I'm not part of Setting Sun, Rising Moon anymore. I really don't care. Best wishes to you.

Look, I must agree with Kayla, and yes btw I understand you better now. I don't roleplay for the TBRPG battles. I don't roleplay to make gil at these forums. I don't roleplay to create a master level character with spells and items etc. I roleplay for the essence of living out a story. I love fantasy and TBRPGS are the easiest way to take part in fantasy worlds. We can create elaborate plotlines and go through the story unable to see the finish, not knowing how it will turn out. We each create a character and watch them develop and interact with each other and can give them real emotions. And we can form relationships between characters that we created. Our inventions can interact, and that in and of itself is quite special. And we also do not know what everyone else's character will do. To me, all these things are part of what is the bauty of actual TBRPGs with plotlines and all the rest.

And frankly, this new system lacks the grand majority of these traits that I love so much. It places characters in a new place each time and will cause trouble for any real character development beyond that in terms of levelling up. Because characters will always be in competition for the rewards any form interaction that is not hostile will be made difficult and so that aspect of RPGing will be nonexistent. There will be no plotlines. What does this mean in the grand scheme of things? No character will ever be in the struggle against evil that makes so many stories great and fun. But rather each character will struggle with others in a pointless repetitive way that will lead to nothing. And because they are always in competition, no unseen relationship or interaction between characters can arise. Remember, Vauly the great fun in the development of the friendship of Kyan and Illion in Forbidden Lands back at AG? That will be made impossible. The end of each game will be clear from the start because someone will always reach the treasure whereas you never know how the story may go in the old-fashioned RPGs with plots. Vauly, remember how much you enjoyed shocking everyone in the twist of Darkness Eternal. No longer will that be possible. And no, monsters will not provide an interesting turn because let's face it, no one would ever let their character die or lose to a monster. They will be another repetition that characters will destroy in the path that we all know they'll reach. And frankly, people do not care enough about getting gil to get interested in this forum. We've already seen this. I'm afraid that any future RPing will be in these types of quests and not in old fashioned plot based games. And so the essentials of this forum will be no more. Every story's ending will be known from the start and characters will no longer have varying relationships and interactions.

Though I created a character, I'm afraid that he may not last long for my interest in these quests will not last long. And if the forum should stay away from the old fashions of RPGing it will be likely that I shall fade away from the Setting Sun and Rising moon. I hope we can rethink the direction of this forum.

my headache is getting worse now....

Quests are simply short stories that offer a reward! THAT IS WHAT A ****ING QUEST IS! TO GET SOMETHING and enjoy the game at the same time!

For example: Paladins go on quests to retrieve the Holy Avenger sword. Thieves may go on a quest simply to get money and gems out of it! Or whatever the **** a specific class needs!

The sheer enjoyment of roleplaying is still in the quest! You don't have to accept the stupid reward! You can simply just give it to another fellow team mate or donate it! It's the players choice to do whatever the hell they want with their reward!

Knight of Doma
January 12th, 2004, 8:56pm
I understand that Vauly, but I ask you to be quite honest now. Do you think it could be half as fun as in the old system? I really think not. What would be the point for all these characters who already have special swords and equipment to go search for another one? What is the motivation to do this if there is no plotline or character development? What about all the things I mentioned that will be lost with this new system? You say we'll enjoy the game at the same time as we get the reward, but frankly I don't see how if it's lacking all those essentials I mentioned. It's not about the reward so much as what will be lost with a system that I don't even think would bring in new people.

........ don't get on my nerves.

If it makes you happy, NOT ALL the quests will have a reward. There may be a rescue, go look for something for someone else, doing someone a favor by killing a monster and so on! Quests are all different!

Knight of Doma
January 12th, 2004, 9:12pm
Ok there's still no ongoing plotline. There's still missing all those things that I loved. If you have fun in just the battles with magic in a fantasy world then good for you, do this and enjoy it. But I like as I said, living out the story. And this has no story. And besides, if characters keep who they are for every quest they will be undoubtebly hostile because in some quest or another the characters will be in competition. And if that's the case, quests will always follow the same pattern. Path to some task, reward, monster etc. Encounter with monster which is killed. Encounter with other character. Accomplish goal. It just will not be fun I don't think because for me it is destroying what I consider the beauties of this type of forum. Again i ask you to remember the fun you had in older games and realize that great aspects of those games are no longer possible.

I just thought of an idea... surprisingly weird at this hour in the morning @_@

How about an actual Battle Arena be created for warriors to compete against each other, ya know like in the gladiator days?
There can be competitions for prizes/rewards for whomever wins certain competitions. And the competitions can be between 2 people or more than 2 people in the arena at one time.

And competitions can be open to whomever wants to gather up a team to gang up on a certain person or persons to seek revenge or just to have fun and fight against them and pick on them. ;)

Or the competititons can be set out for the players to just practice against one person, 2 people, or a group of people (just depends on who wants to practice with newbies or people who want to gain more RPing knowledge basically).

For prizes/rewards given out, I'm sure everyone WILL want gold, so the normal fights could offer out like 10 or so gold out. Leagues = 20 Tournaments = 30 Championships = 40, but these are just examples, the amount is set by whomever wants to be in charge of the fights or be the referee. Plus, depending on how many people are in a single fight and how many people a certain person beats, their amount of gold goes up. No gold rewarded if someone retreats from any fight.

And KOD, if you have the same complaint about the gold offering that ruins the fun of TBRPGing, I'm going to kick your butt. You, yes, specifically you, KOD, you don't have to accept the gold! There are practicing arenas or you can just fight for the sheer hell of it to gather up more knowledge of how to fight and what tactics to use against your opponents (this knowledge can be helpful in the games)! You can be in charge of the Fun-o-meter if you want :p

Ok you should re-read all of my posts in this thread Vauly. My problem had little to do with the reward thing, but rather the lack of a plotline in TBRPGs and what that will do to this forum. i've already listed every negative effect it could have and have yet to see why this new system will be so much fun and attract so many people. My only comment about the reward is that few people care enough about getting gold for this sight to roleplay just for that reason. We already saw how few people turned up when gils was offered to roleplayers originally. Have fun with this, especially if you can get others to play along, I'm just letting you know I won't be too interested and gave you my reasons why. Sorry but that's just how I feel. Don't drop the project on my account obviously, but I had a right to put my two cents in on this idea.

can i just say the whole quest thing bores me to death just reading about it?

not to mention looking at certain people's characters, of which know every spell ever created in D&D books just to begin with. makes it REALLY fekking boring, repetitive, and EASY.
